CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Winnie

With more than a little frustration, I sent off a text to Jeremy in response to the flood of messages he’d sent while I was at the self-defense class this afternoon.

Tristan drove me, and though we’d talked honestly earlier, it still felt like tension lingered between us. Not bad tension, per se, but we clearly needed to spell out what we each meant.

At least, I hoped he didn’t feel we’d settled everything. I hadn’t stopped circling his words except to stress out about the phone call with my family. My mom had been ecstatic to report that when she ran into the family lawyer at the grocery store this morning, he’d thought everything would be done by Tuesday at the latest. All the basic requirements would be fully met, and I’d have the money.

I didn’t fault my parents for being eager about this news. They’d known the reason I’d married Tristan was to gain access to the trust and help with the business. They didn’t necessarily know I needed to escape Calvin because Jeremy was so deep in debt to a sketchy guy who had no problem threatening his sister, but they’d agreed maybe it would be better getting out of town for a while.

But the catch to all of this? The ultimate goal was me returning to Kansas and settling back into life as we’d all known it, just with more liquid assets and hopefully a debt-free Jeremy.

I hadn’t figured out how to carve a different path here. I’d only just truly admitted to myself how much I didn’t want to do any of it, let alone make a plan for an alternative.

I’d put thoughts of my family and Kansas out of my head for the blissful hour of the class. It didn’t hurt that my gorgeous husband was an instructor and every time we made eye contact, my stomach did somersaults.

After wandering out of the training room and waving at fellow classmates, I enjoyed some fresh, crisp winter air before returning to the small room to wait until Tristan was ready to leave. I’d heard Jo attended the intermediate class and none of my other friends did, but I liked everyone I’d met so far and enjoyed chatting with them after class while Tristan cleaned up.

When I entered the training space, I heard people talking but didn’t see them.

“You’ve got to get a better setup, Oak.”

It was Adam’s voice, and knowing he was talking to Tristan, I stopped short of rounding the corner and giving myself away. It wasn’t the right choice, but something about the low tones of the comment piqued my curiosity.

“I’ll be fine.”

Tristan’s short reply ratcheted up my curiosity by ten thousand.

“You need to ice and heat. Anti-inflammatories. Stretch your hamstrings and lower back. And last but not least, change up the sleep situation and make your life easier.”

No reply from Tristan came, but footsteps did, so I jumped into action and barreled around the corner before they could discover me eavesdropping.

“You ready?” I asked Tristan, bright smile covering the newly rising concern.
